| The purpose of this site is to introduce
researchers, designers and other interested individuals to the patterns distributed as a
weekly supplement in Harper's Bazar Magazine from 1868 to 1913. These patterns were
printed in the overlay style with multiple pieces for various
garments layered on top of each other on a single, double-sided sheet. The patterns
also included instructions, illustrations and, occasionally, more detailed descriptions
in the body of the magazine. Patterns for household items and needlepoint were
included along with clothing items for all members of the family.
This project involves scanning, digitizing and organizing the pattern information contained in over 200 overlay pattern sheets which make up a small part of the Betty Williams Pattern Collection housed in the Special Collections Archive at the University of Rhode Island. The ultimate goal of this project is to make these patterns available in digitized vector format and also provide 3D models based on the original pattern pieces. It is hoped that this website will demonstrate how some of the latest computer techniques can be used to add value and accessibility to an historic collection. |
